RecyLink S: A Smart Recycling Bin Solution Supporting Malaysia’s ESG & Circular Economy Goals

In our previous article, we shared about our proud innovation — the Smart RecyLink Station — and of course, its advanced, larger version, RecyLink X. Both are powerful, both are technical, and both were designed to serve household, and large-scale environmental challenges.

But today, I want to introduce something different. Something smaller, closer, more human. Something designed not just for data or efficiency, but for the places we walk through every day.

This is Smart Recycling Bin Malaysia, RecyLink S — the third and one of the most important members of our RecyLink Family in 2025.

WHY

Smart Recycling Bin Malaysia

RecyLink S Exists?

Compared to the original RecyLink Station and the more advanced RecyLink X, S was created with a simple intention: to be present where people actually are.

Not at warehouses.

Not only at outdoor parks.

But in everyday indoor spaces —shopping malls, MRT stations, office towers, universities, libraries, hospitals…places where thousands of footsteps pass by every single day.

Because if recycling is going to be part of people’s habits, then recycling facilities must show up in their daily environments.

That was the beginning idea.

And because it’s small, compact, and easy to transport, our JB team can deploy RecyLink S anywhere across Malaysia without difficulty.

THE PROBLEM with Traditional Recycling Bins

We have all seen them — the colorful bins placed outside malls or inside buildings, labeled “Plastic”, “Paper”, “Aluminum”.

But very often, these bins end up filled with… everything.

Food waste. Dirty packaging. Unwashed drink cups.

Items that contaminate everything else inside.

And when contamination happens, the entire bin — even the clean recyclables —ends up going to the landfill anyway.

Over time, the public loses confidence. People stop knowing what is recyclable and what is not. And slowly… those recycling bins become just another normal trash bin. Their purpose disappears.

This is the part that always made us uncomfortable. Recycling shouldn't be symbolic.

It should work.

What Makes

RecyLink S Different ?

With the RecyLink series being “smart”, S naturally carries that same DNA — the intelligence layer that makes everything work.

When you drop in an item, RecyLink S takes just 3 seconds to identify whether it is the correct material.

If the item is recyclable, the system automatically drops it into the “Recyclable” inner compartment. If it is not recyclable, contaminated, or belongs to general waste, S diverts it into the separate “General Waste” inner compartment.

This dual-compartment design allows the bin to accept everything while still keeping materials properly separated —ensuring cleaner recyclables, reducing contamination, and making the cleaner’s job significantly easier.

This single moment, this small experience, solves a big environmental problem.

How RecyLink S Reflects

Our Philosophy

How S Translates

Philosophy Into Function ?

A futuristic illustration of the RecyLink S Smart Recycling Bin showing AI detection and auto-sorting into two compartments: recyclables and general waste.

Feature 1: Intelligent Sorting (Education + Data)

S automatically separates items into two inner compartments: one for Recyclables, one for General Waste.

This function is not just technology — it is education in real-time. It shows people instantly whether their action contributed to recycling or added to general waste.

It teaches without scolding, and corrects without rejecting.

And because S records every item it receives, these insights become meaningful data for councils, corporates, and communities.

Feature 2: Instant Data Visualization (Data + Transformation)

Each S unit comes with a tablet interface that displays live numbers: How many items were recycled, how many became general waste, and how the impact is growing day by day.

People see their actions changing the numbers in real time.

Cleaners see contamination trends.

Management teams see behavioral patterns.

When impact becomes visible, transformation becomes possible.

Feature 3: Reward System & Circular Economy (Circular Economy + Education)

The full version of RecyLink S includes a built-in member login system, allowing shoppers to earn points every time they recycle.

Mall tenants can participate, offering vouchers, samples, or small rewards that encourage shoppers to return.

This creates a circular flow:

Recycle → Earn → Shop → Participate → Recycle again.

And because each location has its own microsystem, this reward mechanism is fully customizable to the mall, council, campus, or corporate environment. It does not clash with

Terra Green’s main app — it stands independently while still feeding data back into our national Sustainability Grid.

Smart Bin Sensor

Feature 4: Cleaner Notification System (Transformation + Data)

S is equipped with a smart bin-status sensor. When the bin reaches full capacity, it automatically sends a notification to the cleaner’s department.

The system locks itself until the bin is emptied, preventing overflow and keeping the environment clean and safe.

This ensures that RecyLink S remains a functioning facility, not a decorative bin. Once the cleaner empties the bin, the unit reopens and continues its work seamlessly.

The Growing Family of RecyLink S:

A VISION still unfolding

Although RecyLink S is already taking shape on the ground, its journey is still very new — and still evolving.

As of now, the S series has three versions in development: S Lite, S, and S Plus. Each one carries the same philosophy, but is designed for different levels of intelligence, automation, and community needs.

The first of these — RecyLink S Lite — has just begun its trial run at AEON Dato Onn.

S Lite is intentionally simple. It focuses on two core functions:

sorting recyclable vs non-recyclable items, and visualizing the data impact in real time.

This version allows us to observe genuine public behavior inside high-traffic indoor spaces, and understand how people interact with guided recycling systems.

It is our way of listening to the community before deciding how far we should push the technology.

Imagining What Comes Next:

S+ as a Small Robot

While S Lite is simple and steady, S Plus represents the next chapter of our imagination.

Beyond a Bin: The Larger Imagination Behind S Plus

But the vision for RecyLink S Plus goes far beyond the idea of a “recycling bin”.

We never intended S+ to remain as a static box waiting quietly in a corner. In our minds, it is a multi-functional small robot, capable of appearing in different forms, in different layouts, and in different community environments —always serving the same purpose: to sort, to collect, and to guide.

S+ is designed to blend into everyday life, not as equipment, but as part of the environment itself. Because for transformation to happen, recycling cannot remain something people “remember to do”. It must become something people do without thinking. Just like tapping your card when you enter the MRT, or scanning a QR code when checking out.

We imagine a future where recycling is no longer an extra step, but a natural, effortless part of daily culture — especially for the next generation. A future where children grow up seeing S+ in their schools, university corridors, library entrances, workplace lobbies, public transport hubs, and residential facilities.

Where sustainability education doesn’t only happen in textbooks, but in real life, through small habits repeated day after day.

And if one small robot can quietly support this shift — sorting what is recyclable, collecting what is recoverable, educating through interaction, tracking real environmental outcomes —then we believe S+ can play a meaningful role in shaping a culture where recycling belongs not to “programmes” or “campaigns”, but to everyday life.

That is the world we imagine when we design S+.

A New Chapter Begins
